Dining & Entertainment

Burlington and West Burlington residents enjoy the availability of fine dining, charming theaters, live music and sporting events.

We are home to a myriad of restaurants designed to satisfy any taste and budget. Whether you crave a quick meal at a fast-food chain or a relaxed, elegant meal at a fine restaurant, we have it all.

Westland Mall’s multi-screen complex showcases the latest films. For those who prefer live stage productions, Burlington’s Players Workshop offers sophisticated productions and talent. Memorial Auditorium regularly draws a full house for Civic Music Association events, traveling Broadway shows, and concerts that range from international symphonies to American rock and country stars. The well-respected Southeast Iowa Symphony, Bel Canto Chorale and the Burlington Municipal Band also offer popular concerts.

Some of the best in musical entertainment, blues artists, regional bands and other entertainers play at a dozen intimate venues in the community.

If professional sports is more your style, the Burlington Bees’ Class A minor league baseball team has a busy schedule, including a host of home games at the renovated Community Field. The group is the oldest continuously operated baseball team in the United States. Do you like basketball? The Southeastern Community College’s Blackhawk team is the all-time win leader in NJCAA basketball history and has been national champions. About seven miles west, 34 Raceways hosts an exciting summer weekend schedule of stock and sprint car racing.

For quieter cultural attractions, the County Historical Society maintains three museums. The Arts for Living Center—a unique hillside architectural structure in the downtown area—offers an ever-changing variety of exhibits and classes in the fine arts. Several commercial galleries and shows at the Memorial Auditorium offer additional opportunities to enjoy the arts.

A number of remarkable school-based fine and performing arts programs are available to children, offering hands-on youth classes sponsored by member organizations of the Burlington Area Arts Council. You also can enjoy 4-H youths competing at the annual Des Moines County Fair.

We have other local events that entice your entertainment wants. Friday Fests are a three-season series of casual community parties that support the Port of Burlington along the riverfront. The annual Burlington Steamboat Days American Music Festival draws up to 100,000 people to the same area each June. And we also have a variety of downtown activities, including the popular Holiday Lighted Parade street festival.
