Business & Industry
From the mid-19th Century arrival of the railroads, heavy industry and locally owned businesses have provided the economic stimulus on which Burlington, West Burlington and Des Moines County continue to thrive.
We have an ideal area in which to do business. Our location is near major markets. Our excellent transportation systems maintain a steady stream of business into the region. A highly-skilled labor force, abundant energy, water resources, established corporations, cooperative government and plenty of land are among the advantages of doing business in Burlington, West Burlington and Des Moines County.
Our area is home to a broad array of industry, helping to create a strong and stable local economy. CNH has made us the “Backhoe Capital of the World,” and millions of vehicles use Champion spark plugs from our Federal Mogul plant. Major industrial and commercial facilities nationwide use General Electric’s switchgear, PPG Industries’ tempered glass and Tuthill Energy Systems’ sophisticated turbines that are all produced here. Wireless TV reception equipment goes worldwide from our Winegard Co. research and production facility as do other cutting edge electronic products from Antennacraft.
The nation’s armed forces—and many Allies—depend on American Ordnance munitions from the nearby Iowa Army Ammunition Plant. Since the end of the Cold War, the plant has also been “demilitarizing” excess and obsolete weaponry.
The wallboard in your home or office may come from our U.S. Gypsum mine and factory; it may be protected by Diamond Vogel paints. Your children’s’ cookies may come from Vista Bakery. Sterzing Food Co. has a strong hold in the potato chip market; farms and other industries rely on products from Flint Cliffs Manufacturing and Modern Welding. And one of newest locally owned industries, Big River Resources, is providing ethanol that is mixed with gasoline.
Managers and motivated employees enjoy an exceptional level of teamwork in our area. An astounding number of our plants, as well as a growing number of service firms, have achieved ISO 9000 certification. This contributes to our reputation as the regional hub for retail, food, finance, entertainment, healthcare and many other commercial and government activities.
Our 315-acre Flint Ridge Business Park allows industrial and business prospects flexibility to obtain the exact site they need. The park currently has a mix of industrial, commercial, service and recreational businesses. Our newest industries in the park are from Italy. Borghi USA, COBO International and Alfagomma America have all found the USA and Burlington a great place to expand their business. Horse and Hound Country Store and Sports Worx have also opened in the Flint Ridge Business Park, helping to create a variety of businesses in the area. In addition to Flint Ridge Business Park, American Ordnance acts as the manager of the 22,000-acre ammunition plant and has numerous unique opportunities for new enterprises. Many commercial sites are also available in the area, especially in the western and southern growth areas near our major highways and regional airport.
