Crawford County, being located on the eastern edge of the Loess Hills, has a landform unique to its area. The Loess Hills are a fragile, unique geological wonder formed of loess (meaning wind-blown) soil deposits. Loess is only found in western Iowa and China. In Crawford County, loess can go as deep as 200 feet in places. Original plant and animal species have been protected by the rugged loess topography. A large number of the rare animals and plants of Iowa call these hills home. The Loess Hills today are affectionately called “The Fragile Giants.”
