Business & Industry

A town could not survive without strong businesses and industries, and Grinnell has traditionally enjoyed prosperity and increasing economic vitality since its inception.

The downtown business district is a mix of old and new businesses and residences. A collection of ground-level retail stores and service providers line the downtown streets and storefronts, while living space often occupies the second and third floors.

Over the last 150 years, buggies, autos, washing machines, and airplanes were among the other early industries in town. Playground equipment is manufactured by Miracle Equipment Company in Grinnell, and Livestock watering equipment still is produced by Miraco.

The Industrial Park on Highway 146 South was established in the 1960s to attract industry and workers to town. It is conveniently located close to the Grinnell Regional Airport and Union Pacific rail line, as well as a short distance north of I-80. Current firms in and near the Industrial Park include JELD-WEN, a window and door manufacturer; EPC, a plastic components manufacturer; Donaldson Company, a muffler manufacturer; Priority Plastics (formerly Show Me Container), maker of plastic containers; HW Brand, a manufacturer of farm equipment; ASI-Modulex and Image First, sign makers; Sully Cooperative Exchange; Van Wyk Woodbuilders, a small building maker; and Pulmone Wildwood Inc., a soybean-based foods maker.

Other large employers in the area include Grinnell Mutual Reinsurance Company, Grinnell College, Grinnell Regional Medical Center, and several senior living communities, including Mayflower Community, St. Francis Manor, Windsor Manor, Friendship Manor and Seeland Park.

Local businesses and industries are fortunate to have considerable support from local resources such as the local community college, providing workforce training and continuing education courses. A well-educated and highly skilled workforce combines with a low cost of doing business to place this area at the top of any site selector’s list.
