Location and Transportation

Marshalltown is truly in the middle of it all, as its central location in Iowa assures that residents, visitors and businesses are afforded the ease of travel to local, regional and national destinations. Marshalltown’s medial locality places it within one-third of Iowa’s population, with the state’s largest cities—Des Moines, Cedar Rapids and Waterloo—situated just 65 miles outside of the community.

The city is located along U.S. Route 30—a major east-west corridor in the state—and Iowa Highway 14. It is also in proximity to Iowa Highway 330 (seven miles west) as well as interstates 35 (35 miles west) and 80 (30 miles south).

The city of Marshalltown operates the Marshalltown Municipal Transit, a public transportation service offering fixed-route bus service through four basic routes. MMT also provides demand/response public transportation for disabled and elderly people and paratransit service for those unable to access the fixed-route service.

A number of trucking companies provide service in Marshalltown, as does the Union Pacific Railroad Main Line (east-west). In addition, the Marshalltown Airport is available for use by corporate and noncommercial aircraft. Commercial air service can be accessed in under one hour at Des Moines International Airport or in just over an hour at the Eastern Iowa Airport in Cedar Rapids.

Marshalltown’s position in the state also places it among a number of advanced fiber optics network infrastructures. Its location connects it with three Iowa Communications Network (ICN) video conferencing locations, affording community members the potential to communicate efficiently and cost-effectively with other Iowans.

A significant fiber optics capability was added to Marshalltown with Emerson’s establishment of a $12 million data center. This project was part of a larger plan to consolidate the company’s 100 computer centers, which are located around the world, into just four. In addition to Marshalltown, the other data centers will be located in St. Louis, Missouri; Singapore and Western Europe. The Marshalltown data center acts as a backup facility for Emerson’s operations across the globe. The project included renovation and expansion of the existing Fisher Governor Road location.
