Location and Transportation

Newton sits in central Iowa, a mere 40 miles from Des Moines, and is positioned within the center of Jasper County while serving as the county seat. Nearby communities include Kellogg, Sully, Baxter, Monroe, Colfax and Prairie City.

Interstate 80 runs from New Jersey west to California, passing right through Newton, Iowa. In addition, Interstate 35, the north/south corridor of the United States, is less than 30 minutes from Newton, so it’s safe to say, “Newton is truly at the crossroads of America.” Its location, in the middle of America, has always attracted a number of employers. They have easy access to their customers and suppliers in all directions from Newton.

Newton is located 296 miles from Chicago, 218 miles from Kansas City, 276 miles from Minneapolis and 328 miles from St. Louis. Beyond Newton’s location from major Midwest hubs via the interstate, Newton is well connected for travel or shipping by air or rail. Iowa Interstate Railroad goes through the community. This short-line railroad connects to a host of Class A rail lines in Des Moines, just 30 miles west of Newton.

The Newton Municipal Airport is a full-service airport that can handle most corporate aircraft, with a 5,600 foot runway and an instrument landing system. Major airline service is available at the Des Moines International Airport, a 45 minute drive from Newton.
