The Spencer Community School District embraces the highest expectations for child-centered education. Therefore, the Spencer Community School District staff embraces exceptional teaching practices to enhance and enrich a challenging curriculum. The school district has developed trust and communication through partnerships with families, businesses and area service groups. Spencer’s public school system serves 2,040 students, and invested more than $22 million in those students during the 2004-2005 academic year. There are 320 faculty and staff members employed by the school district.
Spencer Community Schools offer classes from kindergarten through 12th grade. Fairview Elementary School, Johnson Elementary School and Lincoln Elementary School serve students in kindergarten through grade six. Head Start classes are held in Jefferson School. Students registered in Early Childhood Special Education attend Johnson Elementary School. Students in grades seven through eight attend Spencer Middle School, and students in grades nine through 12 attend Spencer High School.
Extra curricular activities include an impressive fine arts program and sports teams. Spencer’s large group speech team has attended the All State Festival for 30 years straight. Students have also participated in national debate mock trials and all state choir competitions. The high school band has played at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas and the Tangerine Bowl in Orlando. Spencer’s boys’ and girls’ basketball teams qualified for the state basketball tournaments in 2003 and 2004, as did the boy’s tennis team.
Sacred Heart Catholic School
Sacred Heart Catholic Elementary School in Spencer is a kindergarten through 6th grade school accredited by the Iowa Department of Education. Iowa Great Lakes Lutheran School
Iowa Great Lakes Lutheran School (IGLLS) is a Christian school that strives to develop the whole child — spirit, mind and body — in a quality, Christ-centered learning environment. The school is located in the education wing of Christ the King Lutheran Church in Spencer. IGLLS is a fully accredited institution, offering all-day kindergarten through grade six. All IGLLS teachers are certified by the State of Iowa. Prairie Lakes AEA
Prairie Lakes Area Education Agency has an office located within the Spencer Community School District Administrative Building.
Area Education Agencies (AEAs) work as educational partners with public and accredited, non-public schools to help students, school staff, parents and communities. AEAs provide special education support services, media and technology services, a variety of instructional services, professional development and leadership to promote school improvement.
Iowa’s AEAs are widely regarded as one of the foremost regional service systems in the country — offering programs that can be provided most equitably, efficiently and economically on a regional or cooperative basis among school districts. Services are provided upon request, and may be provided on a fee-for-service basis and through cooperative agreements amongst AEAs.
