The picturesque Iowa Great Lakes Region provides the setting for Iowa Lakes Community College. Iowa Lakes has developed a unique and respected role as a comprehensive community college. Founded in 1966, Iowa Lakes Community College has provided quality, affordable education to the residents of northwest Iowa and southwest Minnesota for nearly four decades.
At Iowa Lakes Community College, students are offered a variety of career path options. Students may choose to attend college in several locations throughout the five-county service area of Iowa Lakes. In addition to Spencer, Iowa Lakes has campuses in Algona, Emmetsburg, Estherville and Spirit Lake. Iowa Lakes also offers approximately 60 college transfer career areas.
An interactive distance learning system facilitates educational access for rural residents. In addition to traditional learning opportunities, diversified offerings of online courses enable part-time students to upgrade skills and raise their standards of living through evening and weekend courses.
Customized training is specifically designed for area businesses and industry. Training can be provided at the business or at Iowa Lakes on a schedule convenient to the business and employees. In addition, general interest courses are available to the general public, and Iowa Lakes is the primary regional supplier of relicensure courses, Adult Basic Education, high school completion (GED), the Small Business Development Center, the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), and short-term vocational training.

Buena Vista University
Buena Vista University of Storm Lake serves the unique needs of adult learners in Spencer, offering students of all ages the opportunity to complete their education without giving up their lives or settling for less than a quality education. BVU works with area communities and community colleges to provide opportunities to a growing number of students each year. A diverse menu of degree programs has been developed to meet the needs of regional marketplaces, and programs continues to evolve to meet new challenges. That means that every BVU student gains marketable professional skills that can be applied in a workplace close to home.
The Lakes and Prairies Center encompasses four separate campuses — Estherville, Spencer, Spirit Lake and Emmetsburg. Students may opt for the eight-week term system with evening classes or attend daytime classes. In addition, some Saturday programs are available. With average class sizes of about 15 to 20 students, Lakes and Prairies maintains the personal atmosphere that ensures every student gets the attention and guidance he or she needs.
