Shopping and Dining
Atchison’s retail sector is concentrated downtown, which is centered around “The Mall,” a pedestrian plaza in the 400-600 blocks of Commercial Street. Specialty shops, gift emporiums, drug stores, restaurants, professional offices and many long-standing family-owned businesses line the beautifully-landscaped plaza.
Many downtown distinctive shops have made Atchison a retail destination attracting shoppers from several hours away. Offering the friendly service of a small town, dozens of shops brim with garden and patio accessories, unique home decor and gifts, children’s books, games and toys, antiques and collectibles. Shoppers can revel in nostalgia at an old-fashioned drug store lunch counter and soda fountain, or enjoy lunch at one-of-a-kind cafe, bakery or restaurant.
Atchison’s Wal-Mart SuperCenter opened in March 2004 and serves a large area of northeast Kansas.
