Sports and Recreation
Both youth and adults can take advantage of the Atchison Family YMCA, the Lions Swimming Pool, West Lanes Bowling Center, plus miniature golf and batting cages at Springside Family Fun Park.
The Atchison Recreation Commission offers rollerskating in Memorial Hall and has programs for baseball, softball, basketball, soccer, volleyball and tennis. Golfers can choose from Pineview Country Club or Bellevue Country Club.
Beautiful city parks give residents the opportunity to pursue healthy activities. The largest, Jackson Park is a heavily wooded area with trails, play equipment, shelter house and picnicking. Other parks have facilities for tennis, basketball, baseball and horseshoes. Warnock Lake offers swimming, volleyball and picnic facilities. Several small watershed lakes provide fishing opportunities, along with the Missouri River, which also offers boating.
The Independence Creek Recreational Trail allows bicyclists and walkers a scenic route that is a combination of share-the-road and levee-top trail. Once completed, the trail will afford a ten-mile loop between downtown Riverfront Park and the historic Independence Creek area where the Lewis and Clark expedition camped on July 4, 1804.
Community leaders have begun working on plans to develop a sports complex facility to be built in Atchison County.
