This area of south-central Kansas has an abundance of natural resources. These riches provide a great scope of opportunities for family enjoyment in the surrounding area, with excellent outdoor recreational facilities for hunting and fishing. Cowley County State Lake located east of Arkansas City, the Kaw Reservoir just south of Arkansas City and the Winfield City Lake all provide a retreat for camping, boating, swimming, skiing and fishing. Canoeing is also popular along the Walnut and Arkansas Rivers. Hunters find a variety of game birds and deer in season. Much of the hunting is done on privately owned land, but we have several well-known outfitters in the area.
The Chaplin Nature Center, owned & operated by the Wichita Audubon Society, provides the perfect habitat for viewing and interacting with nature. The center includes 230 acres of magnificent woodlands, prairies, and streams, located along the sandy beaches of the Arkansas River. It has year-round learning opportunities by trained naturalists, and five miles of walking trails help people understand themselves in relationship to the natural environment upon which we all depend for life. Naturalists can also enjoy exploring and hiking along the trails of the new nature center east of Winfield's Island Park.
Camp Horizon United Methodist Center is 160 acres of wooded trails, rustic lodges and campsites nestled in the rolling hills of south-central Kansas overlooking the Arkansas River Valley...a perfect site for camps, conferences, family gatherings, retreats and outreach ministries of all kinds.
The Winfield Fairgrounds, conveniently located just minutes from downtown Winfield, has 10.2 acres of primitive camping, 6.5 acres of campsites with 600 20-amp electrical services, and a limited number of 30-amp hookups. Located just west of the fairgrounds are the Pecan Grove, offering 44 acres of primitive camping and limited electrical service, and Tunnel Mill Park, which offers 11.3 acres of primitive camping. At Winfield City Lake, camper pads located on both sides of the lake offer water, electric, and sewer hookups for your camping needs. For the ultimate in primitive camping, tents may be pitched anywhere on the lake ground, however shower facilities are also available.
