Derby Business & Industry

What do electronic clocks, in-flight entertainment systems and lead trimmers have in common? That’s easy – all three are products manufactured by growing businesses located in Derby.

Recognized at one time as just another suburban bedroom community, Derby has developed a small but mighty contingent of manufacturers, some of whom export products to buyers all over the globe and others who supply parts and products to the major players in the Wichita aviation community.

Several of those companies can be found in the Derby Business Park, located just west of K-15 highway on Madison. Offering shovel-ready sites of one to three acres, the park has served as an ideal location for growing businesses to expand when the time is right. Local incentives may be available to qualified businesses.

Future development of the new Derby Corporate Park on the north edge of Derby is expected to lead to the attraction of larger manufacturers, particularly those in the local aviation industry.

Beyond its manufacturing businesses, Derby is home to a significant number of service-oriented businesses. These include professional services like accounting, banking, financial planning, insurance and legal services, as well as personal services from hair, tanning, nail and beauty salons. Two local newspapers help to keep citizens up-to-date on the latest happenings.

Wal-Mart Supercenter and other well-known retailers have paved the way in defining and expanding Derby’s trade area. Other large retailers such as Lowe’s and Kohl’s have expanded the offerings for consumers in the Derby trade area.

Derby Marketplace, the newest addition to Derby’s business landscape, offers over 600,000 square feet of space. The shopping center is home to Target, Dillon’s Marketplace, Petco and many other consumer-friendly stores.

Last but not least, the heartbeat of any community is small business. The majority of Derby’s retail and service sector is made up of locally owned and operated small businesses. Derby’s atmosphere and home-town appeal provide a unique shopping and service experience that you won’t find in larger cities. Whatever you need or want, you can find it right here in Derby!
