McConnell Air Force Base

McConnell Air Force Base is conveniently situated between Derby and Wichita. Its location has offered convenient housing and educational opportunities for military families since McConnell’s military operations began in 1941. McConnell AFB is within the boundaries of USD 260, so many military students attend Derby public schools from elementary through high school.

McConnell’s mission has changed with the needs of the U.S. Air Force over the years.

Since the establishment of the Kansas Air National Guard in 1941, McConnell has hosted two Air Divisions, eight wings including the 22nd Air Refueling Wing and 27 different weapon systems – 14 with the active duty Air Force and 13 with the Kansas Air National Guard. Bombers, fighters, trainers, missiles and tankers have called McConnell home.

The current host wing is the 22nd Air Refueling Wing. McConnell’s missions are accomplished alongside the 931st Air Refueling Group of the Air Force Reserve and the 184th Air Refueling Wing of the Kansas Air National Guard. McConnell is

the only base in the United States Air Force where all three force components fly the same aircraft.

Military and civilian employees of McConnell AFB spent approximately $104 million of their total income in the Wichita area during fiscal year 2006. An additional $82.2 million was spent for base operations support, military construction and healthcare. As a result of the payroll expenditures, annual expenses and the estimated value of indirect jobs in the local area, the total impact of McConnell Air Force Base on the local economy was $393,320,402 in ’06.
