On behalf of the Labette County Board of Commissioners, I want to welcome you to Labette County, Kansas. Whether you are a visitor or someone wanting to relocate, please take advantage of our hospitality. We take a great deal of pride in our countys history and our progressive nature in building for the future.
One of our biggest assets has always been the people that have called Labette County their home. Notables that were born, raised or educated in Labette County are: Claude Ryan, founder of Ryan Aviation that built the Spirit of St. Louis; Zasu Pitts, silent film screen star; George Pepperdine, founder of Western Auto and Pepperdine University. With the settling of the West, the MKT Railroad located their shops in Parsons. This set a trend of attracting and creating some of the most skilled labor anywhere. One was Walter Davidson, an MKT machinist, who, accompanied by his brothers and Bill Harley went on to found the Harley Davidson Corporation. It was our strong work ethic, pursuit of education and skilled labor force that prompted the United States Army to build the Kansas Army Ammunition Plant near Parsons in 1941. Munitions from this facility supplied U.S. troops in WW II, Korea, Viet-Nam and Desert Storm.
Labette County has some of the best hunting and fishing in Kansas, from Big Hill Lake near our western boundary, to the winding Neosho River in the east. Labette County has a lot to offer in the way of recreation. There is much to see and do in Labette County. You may want to visit Riverside Park and Bluff at Oswego, or maybe Oakwood Cemetery with its memorials in Parsons, or perhaps even watch the natives catch spoonbill catfish below the Chetopa dam.
Simply put, Labette County is a nice place to live, a fantastic place to visit, and a great place to raise a family. On behalf of the Labette County Board of Commissioners, if there is anything we can provide in the way of information or assistance, please dont hesitate to contact us.
