Community Introduction

Ever growing, but rooted in its rural heritage, Ascension Parish is a diverse mixture of peoples each accounting for its distinct culture.

Now in its third century, a span of time that predates Louisiana’s statehood, Ascension Parish’s long and distinguished history is a great source of pride for residents both new and old.

Ascension Parish’s foundation is dug deep in the rich soil of its riverbanks, soil that gave rise to sugar plantations up and down the Mississippi River. Sugar helped build this parish and tribute to this prized commodity remains part of Ascension’s collective consciousness. The parish’s current economic success is a mixture of modern petrochemical industries (more than two dozen plants call Ascension home), along with agriculture and tourism in the form of visitors from around the world who flock to see our plantation homes.

As the fastest-growing parish in Louisiana for four years running, Ascension draws new residents and visitors alike with its natural attractions, ideal location and warm, friendly people. The bayou country affords sightseeing opportunities of natural splendor and wildlife rarely seen anywhere else. People also frequent the parish to experience our famous festivals and distinctive cuisine that provides a true taste of Louisiana.

Residents of Ascension parish enjoy public services made possible by citizens who reflect our parish’s strong work ethic. At the heart of those services is one of Louisiana’s very best public school systems, along with an array of private and parochial schools. Ascension’s neighborhoods are tightly knit communities, ranging from urban to rural, providing a sense of safety and comfort in an ever-changing world.

In addition to public entities, the Ascension Chamber of Commerce and the parish’s Economic Development Corporation are instrumental in working with citizens and local government to maximize opportunities for growth. These organizations and many others are committed to bringing an even better quality of life to Ascension Parish, while being ever mindful of its cherished past.
