Attractions

Jeff Davis Parish is one of the most unique areas in Louisiana, offering exceptional dining, fabulous wildlife including the pink Roseate Spoonbills, museums, gaming close by and hospitality by the friendliest people in Louisiana.

Jeff Davis Parish is home to the newest distillery in Louisiana and produces “Bayou Rum” from sugar produced in our state. The 18,000-square-foot distilling facility will feature a gallery celebrating the state’s historic role as a sugar cane producer and rum distiller; a 109-year-old farmhouse (the first home built in Iowa, Louisiana) that has been saved and relocated to our site; a gift shop and more. All on 22.77 naturally-set acres, complete with ponds, cypress trees and a sugar cane field.

The Gator Chateau

The Gator Chateau, located at the I-10 Park offers the opportunity for visitors and citizens alike to hold baby gators and learn about their habitat. The I-10 Park (Exit 64) is a perfect location to exit the interstate and spend a little time relaxing, letting the kids play on the playgrounds, fishing in the pond or rocking on the front porch of the tourist information office. Certified travel attendants provide tourist information for Jeff Davis Parish and the state of Louisiana. Information on the parish can be accessed at www.jeffdavis.org and 800-264-5534.

Downtown Jennings will soon have a newly renovated city hall that will include the Zigler Museum, housing six centuries of European and American art, and one block away, the Tupper Museum provides a look at a General Merchandise Store from 1910.

Welsh is home to a museum that showcases the rich history of the community and also is a Cultural District featuring local artists.

Elton is the home of the Coushatta Tribe of Louisiana and the Coushatta Casino located at Kinder, Louisiana. Elton has a lively farmers’ market and a traditional Mardi Gras celebration.

Learn all about Louisiana’s favorite food on a local crawfish tour, hosted by the Jeff Davis Parish Tourist Commission. Available during crawfish harvest season (January to May), the tour includes stops at the Tietje Crawfish Farm, a major harvester of crawfish, and the I-10 Crawfish Cooperative, which centers around the marketing and distribution process.

The food in the parish features seafood and is also strongly connected to rice farming, and dishes like gumbo, jambalaya, étouffée and dirty rice incorporate the crop. Jeff Davis Parish has five restaurants on the Seafood Sensations Culinary trail that runs throughout the parish.

W.H. TUPPER GENERAL MERCHANDISE MUSEUM
Step back in time and experience 20th century life in rural Louisiana at the W. H. Tupper General Merchandise Museum. W. H. Tupper opened his General Merchandise Store in 1910, eventually closing its doors in 1949. Though the store was not in operation, the original inventory remained on the shelves until 1971 when all of the merchandise was warehoused. The inventory continued to exist in the warehouse until Joe Tupper, Jr., W. H.’s grandson, donated the items in order to create the museum. Today, visitors can tour the museum, which is lined with antique toys, school supplies, fashions and fabrics, hardware, medicine and more.

The Louisiana Telephone Pioneer Museum is an excellent option for those interested in the history of the telephone. Located in the W. H. Tupper General Merchandise Museum, this attraction includes exhibits and audiovisual presentations, along with a number of interactive learning displays. Children of all ages revel in the Children’s Telephone Museum, which complements the Louisiana Telephone Pioneer Museum and offers an interactive learning experience designed to educate children on the science of communication and the development of the telephone.

The W. H. Tupper Museum, the Louisiana Telephone Pioneer Museum and the Children’s Telephone Museum are all located at 311 N. Main Street in Jennings. Hours for the museums are Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Admission for adults is $3, and for children and students it is $1. (337) 821-5532.

For the first time in nearly 80 years, Lake Arthur has a hotel for tourists to relax and stay awhile. The boutique hotel called L’ Banca Albergo, which means “The Bank Hotel” in Italian, is a quaint two-story, eight room hotel with a balcony that overlooks Lake Arthur’s downtown area. Guests are greeted in the lobby at the check-in teller desk that sits in front of the original bank vault that has been re-purposed as the hotel’s wine vault. The hotel has captured the character and charisma of old New Orleans architecture. The headboards on the beds are made from 100-year-old doors and wooden posts recovered from a historic home in Jeff Davis Parish. Each room has its own name which was painted on the wall by hand by a local artist. The L’Banca Albergo experience is an exotic blend of romance, history and cultural diversity.
