Chamber President’s Letter
As Chamber President I would like to extend a warm welcome to all newcomers, visitors, and friends alike. The Zachary Chamber of Commerce is composed of nearly 250 members from the community. Zachary’s Chamber of Commerce began its membership in 1912. We have come a long way, but we still have a long way to go.
As we take a look back when Darel Zachary sold his farm to the railroad, little would we have envisioned that the sell would lead to a town with record commerce and residential growth in a quarter of a century. Darel Zachary’s courageous move reminds me of a great quote: “Do not follow where the path leads, Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.”
Zachary’s population has drastically increased over the last few years. A lot of credit should be given to the great school system we have. Zachary schools have been ranked as one of the top four schools as far as achievement scores. We have also been fortunate to have a substantial amount of subdivisions to come under development. With the increase of these neighborhoods an overwhelming amount of businesses are beginning to call Zachary home.
The mission of the Zachary Chamber of Commerce, as a business network, is to promote and enhance the economic, business and community development of the Zachary area. The Chamber is committed to Zachary and its future, and we would like to share that message through the pages of this directory and community profile.
As the state is rebuilding from the devastation of Katrina and Rita I would like to offer a prayer for the victims of these storms. The community has shown an overwhelming amount of support as they have opened their hearts to our most unfortunate neighbors. As time passes I hope that you will continue to call Zachary home.
To all visitors we truly hope that your experience in Zachary will be a lifelong memory; one that will allow you to live here or to visit us again soon.
Today, Zachary is a thriving city, the second fastest growing in the state of Louisiana, with a present population of over 13,000. We are very glad to welcome you as a citizen of our great city. We are proud to say that Zachary is a community of church and family-
oriented residents. Zachary has become a city of amenities with many retail shopping centers, restaurants and beautiful residential and recreation areas. Zachary is governed by a mayor/council form of government that includes a mayor and five council members. Zachary also boasts its own independent community school system, which manages Pre-K through high school and are some of the highest rated schools in our parish and the state. Our students continuously post high academic test scores.
Please take the opportunity to enjoy a round of golf at one of our three golf courses, or perhaps a historic tour of the Port Hudson Civil War battleground or Zachary’s own Historic Village. In a short 20 minutes, you can be in downtown Baton Rouge enjoying the Southern Jaguars, LSU Tigers, touring the USS Kidd battleship or watching a world-class performance at either the River Cities Theater for Performing Arts or the Shaw Center of Performing Arts.
As you meet the friendly Zachary citizens, you will find it is the best city to live, work and raise a family with a quality of life second to none.
Once again, we are pleased to welcome you to the City of Zachary! Please feel free to stop by City Hall or give us a call if we can be of assistance to you
Charlene M. Smith
