contentsPenobscot Bay ME Chamberads

Welcome

Penobscot Bay is perhaps the most scenic body of water on the eastern coast with its entry point in the Rockland-Thomaston area. It is here you will come across a truly authentic Maine experience with an array of islands, a host of historic lighthouses and quiet, protected harbors complete with working lobster boats. You can spot ospreys and bald eagles in the high spruces along the shores, puffins settling on the islands, deer in the open fields, moose browsing the wetlands and harbor seals in the quiet coves.

Though nature is the area’s biggest attraction, it is not all the area is known for. It is here you can access island ferries, comfortable, amenity-filled accommodations, delectable dining establishments, galleries, interesting museums and the Midcoast region’s main retail hub. The presence of the area’s rich heritage still lives along Rockland’s Main Street, a designated Historic District charged with the beautiful architectural examples of the Italianiate, Greek Revival and Colonial styles. What’s more, Rockland boasts more windjammers than any other port in the country. Embodying a major part of this area’s economic traditions are the industries of shipbuilding, commercial fishing, granite quarrying and lime manufacturing.
