Family Fun & Recreation

Sanford offers many scenic locations and a number of freshwater lakes suitable for a variety of year-round activities.

There is a mini-golf course, a par-three golf course and an 18-hole golf course, all of which are open to the public. Various facilities offer many opportunities to stay fit and healthy through fitness centers and other amenities.

On Hanson’s Ridge, the McDougal’s Orchard offers “pick your own apples” in season, as well as fresh vegetables from the farm.

On Shaw’s Ridge, Shaw’s Ridge Farm Ice Cream, BBQ Barn and Mini Golf has a long history of making delicious ice cream flavors for the locals and those “from away” to enjoy. They have just the scoop for you. The grounds are family oriented and you may stroll through some of Maine’s most beautiful gardens as you tour the farm. Enjoy a round of mini-golf and feast on some of the best BBQ around! There is a nursery with plantings for the New England climate.

There is Smitty’s Cinema that has six large-screen theaters that combine first-run feature films with a pub-style menu. Seniors can enjoy the YMCA Trafton Senior Center and the Nasson Community Center offers year-round activities, including sporting events, theatrical performances, and dances for all ages.

The Parks and Recreation Department offers programs for all ages throughout the year.

Tennis, Outdoor Basketball and other court games are available and located in the Elizabeth Benton Playground, Gowen Park and Carpentier Park on High Street in Sanford and the Robert William Batchelder Memorial Playground in Springvale. Sports areas include Little League Park, Blouin Fields, Veteran’s Field in Springvale, Shaw’s Ridge Soccer fields and the Skate Board Park adjacent to the YMCA.

Springvale Recreation Area and Holdsworth Park offers supervised swimming, covered picnic shelters, hiking paths and playground equipment. This area welcomes family and class reunions and a variety of gatherings during three seasons and is always open for walking and hiking events.

Gowen Park is a major point of interest in the community with many events including weddings taking place. Designed by famous architect William Shurcliff who worked on Central Park in New York City with Frederick Law Olmstead, this historic stone gazebo has been the site for many weddings as well as wedding pictures. In the winter it is used for sledding and cross-country skiing. A new offering soon in this park will be a nine-hole Disc Golf Course free to the public.

There are three trail systems through the heart of Sanford and Springvale. The Mousam Way Trail is a pathway that goes from woodlands to streets to parkland and back again through the heart of Sanford and Springvale. It follows the general course of the Mousam River through town. Parts of this trail are paved, making for very easy walking for all ages and ability. Motorized vehicles are prohibited from using the Mousam Way Trails System.

Urban Walks are pedestrian routes along the streets of Sanford and Springvale. Attractive signs point out locations of interest along the way with explanations as to the history of each site.

The Rail Trail is a multi-use trail built on the former Boston and Maine rail bed that passed through Sanford and Springvale. It is used by hikers, bicyclists, walkers, joggers, cross country skiers and horses. Responsible use of both ATVs and snowmobiles is allowed on the Rail Trail. Street vehicles are prohibited on all Sanford Trails.

Goodall Park, a 784–seat stadium, has a covered grandstand with night lighting. It is the home field for the Sanford School Department baseball and field hockey teams. The Babe Ruth League and American Legion Baseball call this their home as well. It is the home of the Sanford Mainers Baseball Team, a member of the New England Collegiate Baseball League.
