Historical Attractions

Native Americans roamed and settled the land known as today’s Dorchester County centuries ago, until travelers from England came to the area in the mid-1600s under land grants from Lord Baltimore. It did not take long for the area to be settled, and soon it was recognized as a county in 1669. Dorchester County, having received its moniker in honor of the Earl of Dorset, has been the home of many prominent figures in U.S. history, including slave trader Patty Cannon; Harriet Tubman; and Annie Oakley, a well-known sharpshooter.

Upon visiting Dorchester County, make sure to take advantage of the ample options for learning about the area’s rich heritage. Self-guided walking tours, driving tours, museums and a number of additional historic sites are all available throughout the county.
