Residents and visitors alike take pleasure in the many outlets for entertainment, recreation and culture in Prince George’s County. The area offers an assortment of interesting museum sites, including aviation museums, local history museums and historic sites, along with rural history museums such as the National Colonial Farm in Accokeek, Northampton Plantation in Lake Arbor and the Patuxent Rural Life Museums in Upper Marlboro. Bowie’s Radio & Television Museum, showcasing a large collection of radio and TV artifacts and literature, is a gem of a museum, as is the Huntington Railroad Museum, also in Bowie.

Laurel is home to the National Wildlife Visitor Center, noted as the largest facility of its kind in the Department of the Interior. In addition to a number of interactive environmental and science exhibits, the center provides hiking trails, outdoor education areas and wildlife management demonstration sites. The Patuxent River 4-H Center and Mount Calvert Historical and Archaeological Park, both in Upper Marlboro, are further environmental education destinations worth visiting. Also be sure to make time to visit the Henry A. Wallace Agricultural Research Center in Beltsville, which provides visitors with a glimpse into the agricultural research industry.


The entire county is bursting with many opportunities for recreation. More than 20,000 acres of award-winning local, county and regional parks stretch across the landscape of Prince George’s, with miles upon miles of water and hiking trails winding throughout as well. There are also a number of well-maintained golf courses throughout the communities, including Potomac Ridge-Atlantic Golf Course in Waldorf and Lake Presidential Golf Club, Marlborough Golf Club, Mariton Golf Course and Oak Creek Golf Course in Upper Marlboro, to name a few.

The NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt is a major draw for those interested in the exploration of our universe. The facility stands as a chief U.S. laboratory “for developing and operating unmanned scientific spacecraft” and “manages many of the organization’s Earth observation, astronomy and space physics missions.” The campus also houses the Visitor Center, which highlights the work of NASA through a number of informative exhibits, events and educational programming.


Families regularly take a trip to National Harbor—a bustling destination that brings together entertainment, recreation, lodging and residential living in one area—and Six Flags America in Upper Marlboro. Spending an entire day in this exciting amusement park is easy, with more than 50 rides, daily concerts, special events, shops, arcade games and the fun of Hurricane Harbor Water Park.

Football fans revel in the entertainment of FedEx Field in Landover, home to the NFL’s Washington Redskins, while baseball fans take in a day at the ballpark cheering on the Bowie Baysox, a Class AA affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles. The area is also home to Rosecroft Raceway, which features the thrilling sport of harness racing; the Show Place Arena & Prince George’s Equestrian Center in Upper Marlboro; and the Prince George’s Sports & Learning Complex, located adjacent to FedEx Field.

Prince George’s is a vibrant place for culture as well. A number of lively art galleries dot the map of Prince George’s County, displaying a wide range of media and styles. Local colleges and universities host exquisite art galleries, which welcome local, national and international artists. Nestled within the historic Montpelier Mansion complex is the Montpelier Arts Center, a facility equipped with three galleries, artist’s studios, and program space set aside for various classes and workshops.The University of Maryland’s Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center is a hub of arts and entertainment in the county, presenting 1,000 exciting events throughout the year. Various theatrical, dance and musical performances; workshops; lectures; and events featuring visiting artists from across the globe are among the many happenings occurring at the center. Other fantastic event venues found in the county include the Bowie Center for the Performing Arts, John Addison Concert Hall in Fort Washington and the Greenbelt Arts Center.

In addition, the area offers several avenues for high-quality, professional theater. The Hallam Players is an excellent student production company at Prince George’s Community College in Largo. Several other community theater troupes dot the map of the county, including Bowie Community Theatre at the Bowie Playhouse, the Publick Playhouse in Cheverly, Hard Bargain Players at the Amphitheatre at Hard Bargain Farm in Accokeek, and the Laurel Mill Playhouse.

Prince George’s County is teeming with opportunities for shoppers and diners. Area retailers and restaurateurs provide patrons with a wide variety of quality products and food items, complete with the finest in customer service.

Bowie Town Center offers a unique, open-air venue for shoppers, with a charming “Main Street” character flowing throughout. Laurel Commons, formerly Laurel Mall, is undergoing a major facelift that will introduce extensive landscaping and a modern streetscape, a new 16-screen movie theater, and updated spaces for new and existing stores and restaurants. Located in Hillcrest Heights, Iverson Mall is lined with a range of shops and services and also offers seven restaurants and several establishments serving up snacks and specialty items. The Mall at Prince George’s in Hyattsville is another regional mall, providing a packed directory of stores and eateries. More options for shoppers are found at a host of neighborhood shopping centers and strip malls throughout the communities of Prince George’s County.

The county’s selection of restaurants is just as impressive as its retail options. Locally owned favorites are fused with well-known restaurant chains, providing an eclectic mix of menus sure to suit any appetite. Diners can enjoy breakfast, lunch, dinner and anything in between at a wealth of restaurants. From pizza, burgers and barbeque to seafood, steaks and pasta…you name it, it’s here.
