Tourism

The Berkshire County tourism is overflowing with things to see and do. From museums and historic sites to recreational opportunities and rich cultural venues and events, the real question is not what to do, but what to do first.

Experience the Shaker lifestyle at the historic Hancock Shaker Village in Pittsfield, or learn more about famous locals at such sites as Chesterwood, the country home of sculptor Daniel Chester French; the Susan B. Anthony Birthplace Museum; the Norman Rockwell Museum; author Edith Wharton’s Mount Estate & Gardens; and Arrowhead, where Herman Melville wrote the renowned novel Moby Dick.

The Berkshire Museum in Pittsfield is a unique site, which brings together diverse collections highlighting fine art and sculpture, natural science and ancient artifacts. Another notable museum is the Gilded Age Museum, housed within the grounds of the Ventfort Hall Mansion in Lenox. The museum showcases a variety of exhibits and offers lectures, theatrical performances and various other events covering American life in the 19th century.

For the artist and the art enthusiast, the Berkshires host innumerous galleries, art centers, performing arts venues, theatre and musical troupes and art and cultural-oriented festivals. A widely popular destination for the arts is the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MoCA) in North Adams. Part of the region for more than a decade, approximately 120,000 visitors each year take advantage of 110,000 square feet of gallery space, more than 75 year-round performing arts events and educational programming for people of all ages.

In addition, this area is a recreational haven, lending itself to such activities as hiking, biking, whitewater rafting, fishing and golf. The Berkshires area is also an exceptional ski and snowboard destination, with people flocking to places including Bousquet Ski Area, Jiminy Peak Mountain Resort and the Catamount Ski Area in the snowy winter months.
