Recreation

A location along the Saginaw River and Lake Huron’s Saginaw Bay makes the Bay Area a leading destination for outdoor recreation. The river itself attracts boaters, fishermen and water sport enthusiasts all year long. The Bay Area also boasts of amenity-filled parks, community recreation facilities and several well-maintained golf courses.

Numerous city- and county-operated park sites and facilities dot the map of the Bay Area. Pinconning Park is a notable natural destination, with a prime location along the Saginaw Bay. In addition to the wide array of year-round activities, including bird watching, fishing and picnicking, the park features a campground with more than 40 modern campsites, six one-room log cabins and two covered facilities available for rental.

An assortment of outdoor diversions, ranging from hiking, biking and fishing to swimming and wildlife viewing, are discovered through the extensive Bay City State Recreation Area and the Nayanquing Point State Wildlife Area. The latter destination comprises 1,400 acres of coastal wetland and is one of the most visited areas of the Saginaw Bay, as a result of the many diverse species of waterfowl and birds found here.

Carroll Park, Veterans Memorial Park and Wenonah Park are excellent sites, and make sure to visit the beautiful Riverwalk in Bay City. The Riverwalk is composed of a two-mile trail complete with a fitness course, fishing pier, a Victorian gazebo and the “World’s Most Crooked Bridge,” which links Bigelow Park and Veterans Memorial Park. The pathway joins the RailTrail, featuring several miles of paved trailway.

Golfing is a popular pastime in the Bay Area, with golfers from all over coming to spend a day on the links at one of many challenging courses. Apple Mountain Golf Course, Bay City Country Club, Bay Valley Resort & Conference Center and Maple Leaf Golf Course are some of the noteworthy courses in the community.

The Bay Area also offers plenty of indoor recreational opportunities through several modern facilities. The Bay County Civic Arena is equipped with both an Olympic ice rink and a professional ice rink, which cater to hockey players, speedskaters and figure skaters. Tennis players hone their skills at the Midland Community Tennis Center, while a variety of team sports, including basketball and volleyball, are available through the Bay County Community Center. In addition to its facilities, the center also offers a summer youth recreation program.
