Tourism

Tourism in Rochester is vibrant, as the area is chock-full of attractions and events for the entire family. Historical sites, such as Meadow Brook Hall and the Van Hoosen Farm, and visual, theatrical and musical arts venues all add to the cultural prospects of this region.

While nearby Detroit offers an excellent outlet for cultural enrichment, the Rochester area certainly has no shortage of cultural opportunities. The presence of Oakland University (OU) plays a vital role in the area’s artistic landscape. The OU Art Gallery spotlights a diverse program of museum-quality exhibitions featuring contemporary, historical and ethnographic artwork. In addition to its exceptional collection, the gallery plays host to an assortment of lectures and performances, such as international guest speakers and contemporary Michigan-native artists.

The OU campus also houses Meadow Brook Theatre, an independently owned and operated theatre showcasing the brightest local and national talent. Meadow Brook Theatre is the state’s largest nonprofit producing professional theatre and is the site of a wealth of award-winning plays and musicals.

The Avon Players is an outstanding theatrical group that has been a part of the community for more than 60 years. Avon Players provides its audience with five quality drama and comedy productions during its regular season within its own theatre in Rochester Hills—a distinct multiple A-frame design, circa 1965. And for those interested in the silver screen, the area is also well served by several first-run movie theatres.

Music lovers will take pleasure in the sounds of the Rochester Symphony Orchestra (RSO), which offers six subscription concerts each year in addition to an outdoor concert for the Kiwanis Club’s Music in the Park series. The RSO also provides educational and outreach programming in the community, such as the annual Young Artist Competition for aspiring young musicians. Continuing the tradition of outstanding orchestral performances, the Meadow Brook Music Festival on the OU campus provides a summer home for the renowned Detroit Symphony Orchestra.

Aspiring artists and regular art enthusiasts enjoy the offerings at the Paint Creek Center for the Arts (PCCA), which has been a fixture in the artistic community since 1982. PCCA offers a full range of programming for people of all ages and skill levels, including exhibitions of emerging and established artists, studio art classes for children and adults, outreach programs, and much more. PCCA is also home to the famous annual Art & Apples Festival, which stands as Michigan’s second largest juried fine arts festival featuring more than 250 artists, live music and delicious homemade apple pies.

After a day of taking in the sights and sounds of the area, visitors are assured a comfortable place to rest. A variety of hotels and motels offer everything from budget-friendly guest rooms to luxurious suites, plus first-class amenities and outstanding customer service to ensure each stay is just like home.

Those looking to stay in a chic, more elegant place during their visit should experience the Royal Park Hotel, a luxury boutique hotel nestled along the banks of Paint Creek. This award- winning, four-star, four-diamond hotel is distinguished by its Old World attention to detail and classic design; a modern tribute to the elegant English manor house.
