A Strong Economic Base

The Sterling Heights, Utica and Shelby Township area is home to a mix of commercial and residential properties.

The City of Sterling Heights has a one-mile industrial corridor bisecting the city on its north-south axis. Major industrial firms with a presence in Sterling Heights include DiamlerChrysler, Visteon, General Dynamics and the new state-of-the-art printing facility for the Detroit News and Detroit Free Press, with one of its buildings being the highest structure in Sterling Heights, and the Chrysler Sterling Heights Stamping Plant is the largest metal stamping plant in the world. Many smaller auto suppliers that support their operations surround all these major manufacturers.

Macomb County is home to several key industries. The largest and most widely recognized is manufacturing. The Chamber’s market area economy continues to diversify and expand, with many cutting edge design and engineering firms being located there, and in recent years, service related industries have grown substantially.

The entire area’s economic interests are protected by the local communities’ planning and building departments, the Sterling Heights Area Chamber of Commerce, all in cooperation with the Macomb County Planning and Economic Development organization, whose clients in 2005 alone, invested nearly $150 million in new and expanded facilities, machinery and equipment, and created or retained more than 2,000 jobs. The Planning & Economic Development is dedicated to supporting and growing this technologically advanced manufacturing community.

Although the City of Sterling Heights is known for its manufacturing corridor stretching from 14 Mile Road to M-59 between Van Dyke and Mound Roads, the City of Utica is home to one of the largest local industries — MNP Corporation, and Shelby Township has a growing light industrial area developing along and out from 23 Mile Road.

With the easy access to both I-94 and I-75 from any of the Chamber’s area along some of the best roadway in the State, manufacturers can send their products to anywhere in the state, the country and Canada.
