US-27 runs north and south and gives travelers easy access to business districts. Highways I-96 and I-69 provide convenient access to destinations that include Chicago, Detroit, Toledo, Ann Arbor and Canada. Roadside rest areas, parks and scenic highlights help make travel not only safe, but also enjoyable. Some travelers may choose to make a stop at one of the farm markets or U-pick farms which are easily accessed off the road.
Business and industry can also depend on efficient transportation. About 240 million tons of cargo is moved by truck, rail and air annually in Michigan. Safety and efficiency is a priority. Government, academia and business work together to improve travel conditions that include an automated clearance system that weighs trucks at highway speeds and a communication-based train control system that enables trains to travel at speeds higher than 100 miles an hour.
Approximately 40% of U.S. and Canadian populations are located within 600 miles of this region. Capital City Airport provides connections to major domestic and international destinations for passengers as well as freight.
In the beginning, the Erie Canal helped Clinton County transform into a thriving section of the country. Because of its location, combined with a top-notch transportation system, the county continues to prosper.
