Parks & Recreation

graphicThere is never a lack of things to do and things to see in Clinton County. This is made evident by an abundance of recreational facilities that reflect residents’ lifestyles.

The 140 acres of St. Johns City Park houses tennis courts, soccer fields, swimming pool, softball fields as well as a wooded area where walking trails, playgrounds and picnic areas are located. Pavilions and a band shell are available for special occasions.

The Veterans Memorial Pool opens in the first days of June. Summer recreation options include softball, volleyball and tennis.

When the weather turns chilly, the City Park becomes a winter wonderland with a lighted ice rink, warming house and sledding hill. Cross country skiers enjoy 8 miles of groomed trails at Sleepy Hollow State Park. Located 6 miles east of US-27, Sleepy Hollow, depending on the season, also offers boating, fishing, hiking, horse trails, bird watching, hunting, swimming and camping.

A river winds through the state park’s 2,600 plus acres of fields and woodland. Nestled in the middle is the 410-acre Lake Ovid. The state park’s modern campground consists of 181 sites, each of which has an asphalt pad, fire range, picnic table and electricity. The beach not only provides swimming, but play equipment, a beach house and concession stand as well.

Sleepy Hollow provides programs such as insect hunts, field study hikes, pond exploration and animal tracking.

A "people platform" at Maple River State Game Area, which is located just north of St. Johns, permits viewing of the area’s river and diverse field, forest and wetland. The Rose Lake Wildlife Research Area performs research on wildlife management of ponds, flooding, soil conservation and more. The station is available as a biological study for students.

"Uncle John’s Cider Mill" family fun farm promotes nature with its nature trail and events, which include horse and tractor drawn wagon rides, arts and crafts fairs, music and tasty treats like pie and cider, made from homemade apples.

Last but not least, the Emerald at Maple Creek golf course located in St. Johns is designed to look like a northern Michigan wilderness. It is one of many golf courses found in the Clinton area, three of which are PGA championship courses, as well as seven other nine and 18-hole courses that challenge golfers of all abilities.

People enjoy life in Clinton County because there is something for everyone here.
