graphicThe City of Chanhassen operates under the "Optional Plan B" form of government as authorized by Minnesota state statutes. Under this plan, the elected city council consists of a mayor and four council members. The mayor is elected every two years while council members are elected to four-year terms, with two positions open every two years. All council positions are representatives at-large and elections are non-partisan. Since the council members are not full-time, they appoint a city manager to oversee the daily operations of City government.

The City provides a full range of municipal services, including public works (street maintenance and plowing), parks and recreation activities, and produces the quarterly Chanhassen Connection newsletter. Police protection is provided through the Carver County Sheriff’s Department, and our award-winning volunteer fire department supplies fire protection.

The Chanhassen Economic Development Authority (EDA) is a local government agency of the City of Chanhassen. Its purpose is to redevelop areas of downtown Chanhassen, encourage new commercial and service-oriented businesses to locate in the central business district, and expand industrial development and the City's tax base. The EDA has also provided alternative publicly assisted rental housing opportunities for both senior citizens and moderate-income families. The efforts of this agency over the past 20 years have resulted in approximately $35 million of commercial development, $60 million in industrial development, and approximately 8,000 new jobs, in addition to adding over 200 units of alternative rental housing opportunities. The agency has also played a vital role in assisting with the funding of over $60 million worth of public improvement projects (roads, storm sewer, watermains, etc.).

Chanhassen local government encourages citizen involvement and participation. Citizens can watch city council, planning commission, and Carver County Board of Commissioners meetings on the City’s cable channel, or serve on one of the dozens of committees, commissions, or taskforces that help shape the City’s future.
