Chaska is not a bedroom community. It maintains a strong, diversified, light-industry base, with over 10,000 jobs available within the city; 5,800 manufacturing positions, and 4,200 non-manufacturing. Attracting and preserving high quality jobs is a priority of the community, and is consistent with its long-term vision of being a place for residents to both live and work. Some of the largest local employers include FSI International, Inc., Entegris, Lake Region Manufacturing and Beckman Instruments. School District 112 employs 500 people, and Carver County and the City of Chaska employ over 300 each.

Unlike many suburban areas, Chaska has a core downtown, which serves as a focal point for both commercial development and social activities. Downtown Chaska has gone through vast changes over the past five years, with the goal of becoming a service and retail center. Chaska has approximately 135 retail/commercial enterprises in the downtown area, employing an estimated 900 people. In addition, there are four shopping centers: City Square Center, Brickyard Center, Jonathan Square and Chaska Commons.
