Over 500 businesses provide local employment, as well as numerous commercial, financial and professional services. Medical clinics, dentists, optometrists, chiropractors, senior housing and nursing home facilities work to support the needs of Elk River. An active economic development department of the City is sensitive to controlled, but steady growth of businesses help broaden the tax base. These activities assure Elk River will be well prepared to meet the challenges in its bright future and support its identity as “The Light Industrial Hub of the Northwest Metro.”

Downtown Elk River is active and vibrant as a result of the revitalization activities that brought additional retail stores, apartments and condominium living, as well as a new riverfront park along the beautiful Mississippi River.

In 2009, the Northstar Commuter Rail system will begin service with a station in Elk River, transporting commuters into Minneapolis with easy connections to MSP International Airport and The Mall of America.
