Maplewood is one of St. Pauls fastest-growing first-ring suburbs, with a population of more than 36,000 and a thriving economy. Major employers include the 3M Company, which provides 12,000 jobs at its Maplewood facility, and Maplewood Mall, a large regional retail center adjacent to I-694.
Located just northeast of St. Paul, Maplewood is an ideal city in which to live and work. The housing stock includes nearly 9,000 single-family homes and duplexes, with options available for residents of all income levels.
For outdoor enthusiasts, Maplewood offers about 450 acres of developed park land and open space, a bikeway system, 34 neighborhood parks and playgrounds, a Nature Center, two public golf courses, and an extensive system of trails. An aggressive open-space acquisition program ensures that the citys public spaces continue to grow.
The jewel of the citys recreation program is the Community Center, a state-of-the-art facility with a running/walking track, racquetball and basketball courts, a performing arts theater, and 400-seat banquet facility. The center also has a six-lane pool for lap swimming, and a leisure pool with 120-foot water slide, water toys, and hot spa. Recreational activities also are offered through the excellent public school system.
Maplewood provides a full range of city services, with a professional police force and a volunteer fire department that operates five stations. An ongoing Community Oriented Services program helps ensure a clear line of communication between city officials and the citizens they serve.
