Willmar, the seat for Kandiyohi County, is located where U.S. Highways 71 and 12 and State Highway 23 meet, with I-94 a few miles to the north and I-90 an easily accessible drive to the south. Both US-71 and MN-23 currently offer four-lane access; highways 23 and 12 are slated for upgrades over the next several years. We are approximately 95 miles west of Minneapolis, and 60 miles from the St. Cloud area.
Such prime location attracts several major trucking firms and delivery services that make their headquarters in the area, joining the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railways major switching yard to form a healthy transportation base for business and industry needs.
The Willmar Municipal Airport supports charter, commercial and jet services with its paved, lighted runway. Soon well be the only Minnesota community to build a complete new airport in recent history, according to the Community Marketing Coalition. Passengers may access major airlines at the Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport or express connections at the St. Cloud Regional Airport.
Willmars 13.75 square miles contain more than 300 acres of parkland, including a public beach. All together, the area boasts 30 lakes.
When Life in Americas Small Cities evaluated Willmar, the experts determined that this area of the country experiences an 83.5-degree difference in average temperatures throughout the calendar year. Precipitation, they discovered, also falls 10 inches below the benchmark number. The upside: These statistics translate into wonderfully colorful seasons, a variety of recreational opportunities and fewer rained-out family gatherings!
