Residents dont have to drive to Minneapolis or St. Cloud to enjoy an enchanted evening, thanks to performances scheduled at the Barn Theater, and the Willmar Education and Arts Center. Recent bookings include the Marlins Family Variety Show, the Willmar Area Symphonic Orchestra, Agatha Christies The Mouse Trap, Anything Goes musical and Arms and the Man comedy by George Bernard Shaw. The Willmar Area Arts Council coordinates a host of art gallery exhibits, high school performances, community theater presentations and community parades.
Of course, those looking for a weekend trip find the Twin Cities a perfect getaway, since Places Rated Almanac ranks this one of the 32 recognized regional arts centers in the United States. St. Cloud also offers a metropolitan section of music, plays and art exhibits.
The Kandiyohi County Historical Museum paints a visual picture of the past, including one of the last steam locomotives to chug through this area of the country, and a tribute to Girl Scouting. The Historical Society regularly presents special exhibits and lecture programs to bring the artifacts of the area to life.
History lovers also stroll through the Sperry House interpretation of family life in the 1890s adjacent to the museum. Boat lovers wont want to miss the private collection of Falls Flyer speed boats on display by appointment at Paul Mikkelsons museum near downtown.
Willmars Pioneerland Library system supports 28 branches and a bookmobile. Unusual offerings include talking books for the blind and a program to rent fine art prints.
