Approximately 88 percent of Willmar high school graduates go on to post-secondary education, compared to only 65 percent as a Minnesota state average. Those who prefer to include leaving home as a learning experience typically opt for the University of Minnesota, St. Johns University or St. Cloud State University.
Local students certainly have plenty of educational opportunities through Ridgewater College. Ridgewater is a community and technical college, with campuses in Willmar and Hutchinson. It is one of the largest two-year colleges in Greater Minnesota, serving more than 5,500 students each year.
Ridgewater offers over 100 educational programs in liberal arts and sciences, transfer options, and technical and career education. Students may complete the first two years of a four-year degree and transfer to a four-year institution, complete a technical program in six months to two years and move quickly into the workforce, or take courses through customized and continuing education to enhance their skills.
Many extracurricular activities are available at Ridgewater College, including intercollegiate athletics, intramurals, theatre, choir, student government, newspaper, student clubs and organizations.
Many of Willmars alumni return to class reunions, and end up relocating their lives in the area once again, thanks to economic opportunities available to those with degrees.
