AUTOMOBILE LICENSES

Automobile licenses must be purchased annually and are due during the month in which the vehicle was purchased. For new residents, Mississippi State Law requires that automobiles be registered within 30 days of establishing residence. Vehicles purchased new or used from a dealer or individual must register within seven days. In all cases, license plates must reflect the county of residence of the registered owner. DRIVER’S LICENSE
New residents of Mississippi must apply for a Driver's License within 60 days. If the applicant has a valid out-of-state license, only a rules, signs and eye test is required. If the applicant's out-of-state license has expired, a road test may be required. A Social Security card must be shown. Minors making application must be at least 15 years of age and present a Social Security card and Birth Certificate for proof of age. The Mississippi Highway Patrol operates a testing center located in Jackson at Metro Center Mall’s lower level by Belks from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and in Canton at the Mayor's office only on Thursday from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. For more information, contact:

These cards may be used anywhere you would use your driver’s license except while driving.

HANDICAPPED DECALS
To obtain a Handicapped Decal for your automobile, contact the Madison County Tax Collector at 601-856-4472 for application information. Applications must be completed and attested by your personal physician prior to receiving a decal.

HOMESTEAD EXEMPTION
If you are buying or own a home and occupy it as your primary residence, you may be eligible for Homestead Exemption. Exemption applications are made at the Madison County Tax Assessor's office (address below) and require the following information:

• Deed or Warranty Deed
• Sale Price of Property
• Deposit Toward Purchase
• Balance Owed
• Monthly Payments
• Interest Rate
• Mortgage Company Name and Address
• Automobile License Number

MARRIAGE LICENSES

Applications for Marriage Licenses are made at the Madison County Circuit Clerk's Office between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. A $23 cash or check fee applies.

Mississippi State Law requires that applicants appear together and must have legal identification (Driver's License and/or Birth Certificate) and blood tests. Applicants under the age of 21 require all living parents/guardians’ signatures.

MOTOR VEHICLE INSPECTION
Mississippi State Law provides that all vehicles shall be inspected annually. Many service stations can perform this simple inspection. Cost is $5.

PROPERTY TAXES
The Madison County Tax Collector collects all property and personal property taxes (County, City and School). See Automobile Licensing for address and telephone.

VOTER REGISTRATION
To be eligible to vote in city, county, state or federal elections, a person must be a citizen of the United States, age 18 or older, and must have resided in Mississippi and this election district for at least 30 days. Constitutional and statutory requirements must be met before one can be registered. Potential voters must be registered at least 30 days prior to any election to be eligible to vote.
