Marion County is ideally located in South Central Mississippi, bordering the State of Louisiana, and lies approximately 100 miles north of the Gulf Coast and 85 miles south of the state capital, Jackson. Four state highways link Marion County with neighboring counties and Louisiana. MS Highways 586, 587, 13, 35,43 and 44 run through or near Columbia, and link the county with US Highway 98. Columbia is located 30 miles west of Interstate 59 and 45 miles east of Interstate 55. Because Marion County is conveniently located within a couple of hours of several large cities, county residents are able to enjoy small-town living with easy access to more urban areas.

Residents can access commercial air transportation at the Hattiesburg-Laurel Regional Airport in Moselle, MS. The airport, located 38 miles from Columbia, offers commercial flights as well as general air service. Columbia has its own general airport with a runway length of 4,460 feet. Two international airports are located within 100 miles of Columbia-Jackson, MS International and New Orleans International. The Mississippi State Port, located 100 miles south of Columbia in Gulfport, provides a means for importing and exporting goods all over the world.
