The City of Columbia is the administrative center of Marion County, making it the County Seat. Columbia is governed by a mayor-alderman form of government, with the mayor and five aldermen being elected. The City Board meets the first Tuesday of each month. The Columbia Planning Commission meets the first Monday of each month. The Columbia Police Department, with more than 30 full-time officers, serves and protects the city with regularly scheduled patrols, education programs and quick response times. The Columbia Fire Department is available to respond to fire emergencies in the city.
A five-member elected Board of Supervisors governs Marion County, one of Mississippi's 82 counties. Marion County is a member of the National Association of Counties (NACo), which was set up as a forum for counties to be heard and have a voice. The Marion County Board of Supervisors meets the first 10 business days of the month. The Marion County Sheriff's office serves areas outside Columbia's city limits. Several fire protection districts exist in the county.
Both the city and county, along with all departments they oversee, work diligently to improve and enhance the quality of life for all citizens.
