Education

Brentwood School District is a highly rated, progressive public education resource offering a host of quality programs and resources not normally found in a district of its size. The district is comprised of two elementary schools, one middle school and one high school, which collectively enroll more than 900 students.

Recently, voters approved a $6 million bond issue for the development of a new early childhood center at 1201 Hanley Industrial Court. The center is expected to open to the public by January 2010.

The school district has much to be proud of, as its graduation rate stands at 95.7 percent and the number of its professional staff members with advanced degrees exceeds 81 percent. The district and its schools have been recipients of many prestigious awards over the years. In 2008, the district earned the Distinction in Performance Award by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, and in 2009, the Missouri Assessment Program scores at McGrath Elementary, Mark Twain Elementary and Brentwood High School ranked among the top 10 in the state (in its size category) in the areas of communication arts, math and science. Also in 2009, the high school made U.S. News & World Report’s list of America’s Best High Schools, and Mark Twain Elementary was named one of 15 “Gold Star Schools” in the state by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.

The area is also home to various private and parochial schools, as well as two outstanding institutions of higher learning. Fontbonne University is a four-year, Catholic, coeducational institution offering 33 majors, 25 minors and 18 Master’s degree programs, as well as evening programs for busy adults. Brentwood also hosts Missouri College, which provides short-term professional programming in the areas of dental, healthcare, massage therapy and business administration.

Supplementing the educational resources of the community is the modern Brentwood Public Library, which recently celebrated its 70th anniversary in 2008. The library underwent extensive renovation in 2004, adding a new entrance, circulation desk, meeting and computer training room and a redesigned children’s area and staff work space. The library is filled with more than 50,000 items, including books, magazines, CDs and DVDs, coupled by eight public-use computer stations and Wi-Fi Internet access.
