Parks and Recreation

Opportunities for relaxation and fun are plentiful in the area. Sunset Hills has over 70 acres of parkland and maintains four recreational areas for the enjoyment of its residents. The city’s largest recreational area, Watson Trail Park, is located on West Watson Road, just west of South Lindbergh. This park mixes the right blend of undisturbed natural beauty and open, passive areas for everyone to enjoy. Four tennis courts, basketball and volleyball areas, a municipal pool, nature trails, playgrounds, a nine-hole disc golf course, fishing lake, and picnic shelters are all located here. The city is planning to add a new community center and aquatic center to their facilities in the near future.

The most recent addition to Sunset Hills’ parks is Minnie HaHa Park, which was dedicated the summer of 2005 and overlooks the bluffs of the Meramec River. Minnie HaHa offers nature lovers walking trails, playground sites, a scenic observation deck, and picnic shelters.

The City of Crestwood has over 115 acres dedicated to parks, the largest of which is the 85-acre Whitecliff Park. In 1971, the Crestwood Board of Aldermen realized that an old abandoned quarry adjacent to a small eight-acre park was a vital treasure to preserve. That quarry is now part of today’s Whitecliff Park. The city has taken care in preserving 40 wooded acres of the park to provide a passive oasis in the midst of a bustling community of both neighborhoods and developing retail centers.

In addition to playground equipment, a sports field, four lighted tennis courts, picnic sites and pavilions, a multi-use court for basketball and roller hockey, a sand volleyball pit, a cache course, and trails, Whitecliff houses the Crestwood Community Center. This 22,000 square foot center is composed of a gymnasium, fitness room, meeting rooms, dance gym, two racquetball courts, and administrative offices. Complementing the facilities within the Community Center is a variety of recreational programming and special events for all ages to enjoy.

Whitecliff Park is also where the Crestwood Aquatic Center is located. The Center features a large, 10-lane multi-purpose lap pool, lily pad challenge area, giant slide, zero depth beach entry area, a lazy river, and a two-level children’s play pool characterized by water falls and supplemental play features. Swim lessons, water fitness classes, and a swim and dive team also make up the offerings at the Aquatic Center.

Both cities offer residents a vast selection of recreational and fitness programs to fit all needs. Whether looking for heavy-duty recreation or a simple walk in the park, visitors and residents alike have no problem finding it in the Crestwood-Sunset Hills area.
