Parents looking for a strong curriculum, modern facilities, and quality guidance support will not have to look far in the Crestwood-Sunset Hills area’s education system. Serving the vast majority of this area’s residents is the esteemed Lindbergh School District. Lindbergh School District is AAA-rated, has held the “Distinction in Performance Award” for seven consecutive years, named one of the top U.S. High Schools by Newsweek magazine for 2005, 2006, 2007, made the 2009 “America’s Best High Schools” list from U.S. News & World Report, is one of only two International Baccalaureate Programs in the entire area, and home to two U.S. Blue Ribbon Schools, three Missouri Gold Star Schools, and one National School of Character. The District’s mission is to develop competent and caring graduates through exceptional programs, services, and personnel.


The nationally-acclaimed Thomas Jefferson School, a small, private, coeducational, college preparatory school serving grades 7 through 12, is located on 20 scenic acres in Sunset Hills. Founded in 1946, TJ School currently enrolls 80+ students in its program and boasts a student-to-teacher ratio of 7:1. Every aspect of Thomas Jefferson School (TJ) challenges students not only academically, but focuses on the development of life-long skills and insights that are useful for the rest of their lives. Students come from around the world to study at TJ. The boarding experience, even for local students, is one that encourages independence. The curriculum is intense – strong in math, world literature, writing skills, classical and modern languages, history, and science. TJ senior students are noted as being among the top 10 in boarding schools in the country when it comes to median SAT scores, according to the Boarding School Review.

Students looking for more of a high-tech approach may attend South Technical High School, a public high school located in Sunset Hills. South Tech provides cutting-edge technical and career training to high school students in grades 10-12 in 33 different technical majors. Approximately 900 students are currently enrolled in a broad scope of technical fields, ranging from Laboratory and Pharmacy Technology and Electronics and Robotics Engineering to Medical Exploration, Precision Machining and Automotive Technology. Thomas Jefferson School

On the parochial side there are a number of Catholic, Lutheran, Christian and non-sectarian private schools in the community.

Higher education options in the Crestwood-Sunset Hills area include St. Louis Community College – with its Meramec campus located only minutes west of Crestwood and Sunset Hills. The two-year institution awards associate degrees and provides career-oriented technical training. Nearly 70 percent of St. Louis Community College students are enrolled in college transfer curricula. In addition to transfer programs, Meramec offers unique career and technical programs in areas such as horticulture, occupational therapy assistant, physical therapist assistant, architectural technology, interior design and information reporting technology. The Meramec campus is home to the Center for Visual Technology, a set of state-of-the-art instruction labs containing the latest Macintosh computer workstations, operating systems and software available. The Center for Visual Technology is a component of the campus’ Center of Excellence – Digital Arts and Technology Alliance and serves students who are training for careers in emerging visual arts areas. The art program is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design.

Other career paths might find students at Vatterott College located in Sunset Hills or ITT Technical Institute, where they can obtain certification or a degree in many fields from business management to HVAC, IT, Medical Assistant, and more. Founded in 1961, the family-owned and operated National Academy of Beauty Arts is one of St. Louis’ oldest accredited schools of cosmetology. Their Cosmetology Institute and Esthetics Institute offer a full- or part-time curriculum to meet the needs of today’s student population.

Other nearby higher education institutions include Fontbonne University (with their OPTIONS program offered at their Kennerly Plaza location just minutes south of Sunset Hills), Logan College of Chiropractic, Maryville University, Washington University, St. Louis University, Webster University, Lindenwood University, University of Missouri at St. Louis, St. Louis College of Pharmacy, and Missouri Baptist College.
