History

Learning about the history and significant features of Independence is easy, as the city hosts 20 interesting

historical attractions. The Truman heritage sites are among the popular stops in Independence. The Truman Presidential Museum & Library and the white Victorian-style Truman Home are always bustling with visitors from all over the country. Other Truman attractions include the Truman Courthouse & Office, Truman Memorial Building, Truman Depot and Truman Farm.

Independence also invites visitors to check out its Civil War sites, including the 1859 Jail, Marshal’s Home & Museum, which once housed Frank James, brother of the notorious Jesse James. The Mormon religion has had a strong presence here since the city’s early days. Visitors can experience the Mormon culture at one of several sites,

including the Mormon Visitors Center, Heritage Plaza and the Missouri Mormon Walking Trail, among others. The National Frontier Trails Museum is a further historical attraction that offers a glimpse into the lives of those who traveled along America’s main western trails, which had a major influence on the development of Independence. In fact, Independence stands as the only place in the country that served as the starting point for the Santa Fe, Oregon and California Trails – earning the moniker, “Queen City of the Trails.”
