Residents and visitors alike can enjoy all sorts of fun activities for the whole family. In Jefferson City there are dozens of governmental buildings, historic sites and museums for a fun and educational experience. The city’s natural areas are perfect both for those who want an active day of fun and those searching for a little R&R. From sailing, biking, ice skating, roller skating, bowling, golf, tennis, swimming, and most outdoor sports, you can always find something to do in Jefferson City. Three YMCAs and a variety of health & fitness opportunities are also available. Jefferson City boasts 15 miles of paved greenway trails. You can even bike across the river on the Missouri River Pedestrian/Bike Bridge, which connects to the Katy Trail.

For the history buff: Tour the Capitol and Governor’s Mansion, visit the Lewis and Clark Monument at Katy Trailhead Plaza, the Missouri State Museum, Museum of Missouri Military History, Cole County Historical Museum, or one of Jefferson City’s many historic landmarks. People travel from all over the country to tour the historic Missouri State Penitentiary, which is older than Alcatraz.

Jefferson City is the seat of our state government: Check out the Capitol; Harry S. Truman State Office Building, which houses many of Jefferson City’s government offices; the Missouri State Archives and its collection of records of Missouri’s state and local governments; or the Missouri Supreme Court Building.

For lovers of the great outdoors: Breathe in the fresh air at the Carnahan Memorial Garden located at the Governor’s Mansion; The Katy Trail State Park for hiking, biking, observing nature and a little history lesson along the way; or the Runge Nature Center for nature exhibits and trails with wildlife viewing areas and nature library. Jefferson City also boasts miles and miles of greenway trails for biking, walking, or running. Located only 40 miles from the Lake of the Ozarks, residents are within an hour of one of the Midwest’s premier family fun destinations which has more shoreline than the state of California.

For fine arts aficionados: Spend a day browsing through Jefferson City’s art galleries; enjoy dinner and a show at the Capital City Players’ Dinner Theatre; listen to delightful melodies performed by the Jefferson City Cantorum, Symphony, or Community Band. Attend concerts sponsored by the Concert Association; or spend a night at the theater. Jefferson City also offers a wide variety of live entertainment.
