Chamber Welcome

photoOn behalf of the Kirkwood Area Chamber of Commerce, I would like to welcome you to our five city area. This Chamber of Commerce represents the cities of Des Peres, Glendale, Kirkwood, Oakland and Warson Woods.

Each of our cities has their own unique characteristics. They have a wonderful blend of areas rich in history, progressive business attitude and true bedroom communities. All of our cities have continued to grow. This growth is monitored by the cities, which provides for a wonderful balance between the needs of business and our residents.

Two of the primary reasons families settle in our area are the quality and characteristics of the homes and the safety and comfort of the area. Our area also has many historic homes, churches, historic shopping districts and progressive shopping centers.

Each year more and more of our citizens and visitors flock to our many tourism attractions. We have nature centers, museums, parks, community centers, community festivals and one of the largest childrens' museums in the United States.

Our schools offer an educational experience that is unmatched. The Kirkwood School District has one of the highest graduation rates in the country. This is due not only to the high quality of education, but also to the spirit of cooperation and continued teamwork between parents', teachers', administrators' and residents' commitment to excellence.

Spend some time in our communities. We are proud to show you what we have to offer. Please come back and visit us again. Who may end up staying!

Jim Wright, President
Kirkwood Area Chamber of Commerce

photoPleasures in the Purchase

Shopping in the Kirkwood Area is all things—a convenient necessity, a joy, an experience to be fondly remembered because of a cherished item found.

Kirkwood Junction Special Business District serves over 100 downtown Kirkwood shops and restaurants. Lining Kirkwood Road, Argonne Drive (formerly "Old Main Street"), Jefferson Avenue and other side streets, shops offer everything from uniquely crafted gifts to modern necessities. There's even a farmer's market offering fresh produce that's open every Thursday through Saturday from early April through September. In October, the market becomes a pumpkin patch. Fresh-cut Christmas trees, holiday decorations and hot apple cider draw residents to the Christmas market in December.

Kirkwood Commons, Kirkwood's newest shopping center will be open by the Fall of 1999. This development will bring several well-known anchors to the area's shopping options.

Traveling from Kirkwood to Des Peres on Manchester Road (the original Route 66) you will find Westfield SHOPPINGTOWN–West County Center, a modern enclosed shopping mall that's preparing to double in size from about 600,000 square feet on one level to 1,200,000 square feet on two levels, with four department store anchors. At the "sign of the dove" you will find excellent accessibility and convenience, with 61 specialty stores anchored by Famous Barr and JC Penney. West County Center offers a weekly kids' club program, a senior stepper mall walking program and mallwide gift certificates redeemable at all five Westfield Shopping towns. Other amenities include complimentary strollers, kiddie kruzzers, wheelchairs and copy services.

Dining is one of the many pleasures to be found in the Kirkwood Area. Menus cover everything from gourmet and ethnic delights to family dining and fast food.
