Poplar Bluff Government

Poplar Bluff is fortunate to have a caring and forward-thinking administration to guide its development, as well as responsible public services that protect the community’s safety in the midst of rapid growth.

The city operates under an optional council-manager form of government in which a professional city manager heads the city council. The council is made up of seven elected members who in turn elect a new mayor yearly.

The administration is especially concerned with improving communications between the government and residents.

A government that is in touch with its residents is better able to know their cares and concerns and gain advice as to how to make Poplar Bluff an even better place to live.

In that spirit, the city has adopted a 5-Point Plan to facilitate communication, including a column distributed through the media to inform residents on city issues to be addressed in meetings, frequent opinion surveys, public meetings for important topics, open office hours to meet with citizens and an E-newsletter that keeps residents up to date on what is happening at city hall. With these initiatives, the town is that much closer to acting purely on behalf of the community’s best interests.

In addition to the City Council Chambers, Poplar Bluff’s City Hall is headquarters for city administrative offices, police, utilities, municipal court and emergency management.

The Poplar Bluff Police Department is a premier agency staffed with innovative, highly trained, technically proficient and culturally diverse officers. The Poplar Bluff Police Department consists of 42 sworn officers, seven telecommunicators and six civilian employees who are dedicated to preserving the public safety for all citizens of Poplar Bluff.

Poplar Bluff is also served by the Poplar Bluff Fire Department, which protects 18,000 people living in an area of 12 square miles. The fire department operates out of three different stations and employs 34 paid personal, including a chief, assistant chief, secretary, mechanic, three shift commanders, six captains and 21 firefighters. Together, the department makes up a fast and responsive team that is always just a moment away from any citizen in need.
