Sample Regional Spirits

Turns out the Midwest isn’t just known for beer and cheese; people are taking note of its wine, too.

Local wineries have emerged as standouts that could give Napa Valley venues a run for their money. Around St. Charles, local wineries offer award-winning vintages and top-notch views of the region’s rolling hills to boot.

Augusta, in St. Charles County, is home to several excellent Missouri wineries where visitors can sip the vintner’s special wines and enjoy picnic lunches with spectacular views of the rolling hillside vineyards. This region is not only notable to the state of Missouri, but has been recognized internationally since the turn of the 21st century when Augusta began exporting wine to Germany.

Here are a few of the more than 14 local wineries:

Cedar Lake Cellars, Wright City
Chandler Hills Vineyards, Defiance
Montelle Winery, Augusta
Noboleis Vineyards, Augusta
Sugar Creek Winery, Defiance

Not to worry, though: beer doesn’t take a backseat here. Those who prefer cold pints will find a number of microbreweries that aim to quench their thirst. They include the following:

Augusta Brew Haus, Augusta
Exit 6 Brewery, Cottleville
Friendship, Wentzville
O’Fallon Brewery, Maryland Heights (started in O’Fallon)
Third Wheel Brewing, St. Peters
Trailhead Brewing Company, St. Charles
Two Plumbers Brewery + Arcade, St. Charles

Local vineyards and breweries offer other extras to make their locales one-stop destinations. Come for the drinks and stay for dinner, ambiance, breathtaking terrace views, tasting rooms, gift shops and more.
