A Full Service Town

The City of Trenton is a full-service municipality with a Mayor-Council form of government. The Mayor is elected at-large to serve a four-year term while the eight council members are elected at large to serve alternating two-year terms. The City Administrator is appointed and responsible to the Mayor and City Council for the administration and documentation of all city affairs.

As a full-service government, the City of Trenton has many departments including fire and police, streets, parks and recreation, and building inspection/code enforcement. Additionally, the city maintains Trenton Municipal Utilities. This city-owned utility service provides water, wastewater, and electric service for the businesses and residents of Trenton. Gas service is provided to a large number of customers by Aquila and the Grundy Electric Cooperative provides rural customers with their electric needs.

The City also supports an economic development office which works to support area businesses as well as those looking to relocate to the area. The economic development office works in conjunction with the local Chamber of Commerce to support tourism and the revitalization of downtown Trenton.

The City of Trenton lies within the boundaries of Grundy County and is served by the Grundy County Commission. The Commission works out of the Grundy County Courthouse along with several other county offices. Currently, the county is overseeing the construction of a new state-of-the-art county jail and has an active bridge replacement program.
