Nebraska's Good Life Gets Noticed

It’s no secret – Nebraska and its communities consistently score well in national comparisons for quality of life. For example, financial network CNBC ranks Nebraska as one of America’s top states for quality of life thanks to the state’s low crime rates, clean environment, low stress levels, accessible and affordable health care, and low cost of living.

MarketWatch.com recently concluded that Nebraska’s affordability “can bolster peace of mind,” as the median home costs around $120,000. CNBC has ranked Nebraska the fifth most-affordable state in which to live. As an example, a household making $65,000 annually in Lincoln would need to earn $100,000 for a comparable lifestyle in the Washington, D.C. suburbs.

Gallup surveys show Nebraska is among the best states for overall well-being, including emotional, physical and mental health. And Nebraska’s outdoor attractions, urban entertainment, small-town charm and low jobless rate are positives that cannot be ignored.

Nebraska’s major cities score high, too. Consider a recent study of major U.S. cities by NerdWallet. Lincoln and Omaha ranked in the top five for overall lifestyle. The online publication looked at income and health benefits, local economic strength and work-life balance.

Regarding life in Nebraska’s capital city, the study concluded: “Lincoln offers a low cost of living (just 20.6 percent of the average income goes to rent, which is lower than the country’s 27.1 percent average) as well as one of the lowest unemployment rates of any metropolitan city in the U.S.” Lincoln is also home to the University of Nebraska, which contributes to the local workforce and strengthens the local economy.

As for Omaha, the study stated: “Workers in Omaha enjoy a work-life balance with a relatively low number of average weekly hours worked and short commutes. The major industries in Omaha include service, trade, transportation and finance. Local universities such as the University of Nebraska-Omaha and Creighton University also help contribute to the low unemployment rate in the region.”

In a world that is increasingly more turbulent and tumultuous – with congested urban centers where the American dream seems unaffordable or unattainable – Nebraska stands out because of its perfect blend of opportunity, stability, serenity and affordability.
