Nebraska's Official Fourth of July City
Take a look around Seward, Nebraska on any given day and what are you likely to see?
Surveyors taking measurements and stringing tape. Cement mixers churning up their next load of concrete. Dump trucks hauling mounds of dirt. Painters, carpenters, electricians and carpet layers streaming into town for the day’s work.
The sights and sounds of progress are everywhere in this community just 30 miles west of the Nebraska capital, Lincoln.
Seward’s latest enhancements include new downtown sidewalks, a 21st-century hospital, a turret-topped library, a fun-for-all-ages swimming center, a reverse osmosis water treatment plant and a 2.7-mile hiking and biking trail.
Successful passage of bond issues and generous private donations have turned many city planners’ dreams into reality.
Seward is just as dedicated to preserving its pioneer past and colorful traditions. The community has rallied behind a monument to Seward’s first homesteader and the restoration of a rare, 20-note tubular bell carillon in the county courthouse dome. For nearly 140 years, Seward has celebrated the Fourth of July with a festival that draws participants from around the world.
