Investments in a variety of industries have helped Washington County sustain
economic growth and high employment rates for decades, and buoyed the
area’s commerce even during times of national recession. Manufacturing,
agriculture, technology, telecommunications and education remain among
the community’s leading industries, but a diverse set of enterprises
in other areas help to keep the economy healthy and the area attractive
to businesses and families looking to relocate.
County has an enviable unemployment rate of under 3 percent, well below
the state and national averages. Dozens of area companies maintain large
rosters of workers, ranging from Omaha Power’s approximately 600
employees to Enterprise Publishing, which has a workforce of 50. Cargill
Dow (specializing in biotechnology), HunTel Systems (telecommunications),
Cargill Sweeteners (corn milling), Concrete Equipment Co. (manufacturing),
Blair Community Schools and Memorial Community Hospital are among the
many successful employers operating in and around Blair.
