PUBLIC SCHOOLS (K-12)

The Lakewood Public Schools serve a culturally diverse student population of approximately 5,100 who attend one of four elementary schools, middle school, high school or alternative high school. More than 70 percent of our graduates attend college or other higher learning institutions.

The district provides many programs to meet the needs of the individual student. The comprehensive curriculum includes special modern computer labs, well-equipped science labs and libraries with interactive CD/ROM computers connected to the NJ LINK databases. Computer skills are taught in all grades. A variety of unique courses are offered at the high school through an interactive satellite TV network.

The elementary-level Language Arts programs stress reading, writing, listening, speaking and thinking as an integrated whole. Intensive daily instruction is also given in Mathematics at all levels. Core instruction in basic academic subjects is enhanced by instruction in four foreign languages in grades 7-12, and Advanced Placement and Honors courses in most subject areas at the high school. Enrichment courses include all fine, performing and practical arts.

Student activities include extensive athletics programs, student governments, student publications and clubs supporting academic subjects, community service, recreational and special ethnic interest. Music activities include marching and stage bands, a gospel choir, a comprehensive orchestra program and fully-staged Broadway shows.

The rich history of Georgian Court University spans back more than a century and reaches confidently toward the future with clear purpose and inspired intent. Founded in 1908 by the Sisters of Mercy of New Jersey, Georgian Court University offers a rich academic experience from a unique perspective. A Roman Catholic university, Georgian Court encourages all members of its university community not only to take note of the social problems in their communities and the world, but also to take action and remedy them.

Georgian Court University offers a women’s day university and coeducational evening and graduate programs. Their individual attention and faculty-to-student ratio of 15:1 are just some of the factors that have led to our No. 1 ranking in our tier for freshman retention rate in U.S. News and World Report’s Best Universities issue. Twenty-six undergraduate majors and 10 graduate programs give students ample choice among liberal arts and professionals. To help communities deal with shortages of key personnel—teachers and nurses—Georgian Court University has accelerated elementary and secondary education programs and a post-baccalaureate program in nursing, offered in concert with another university and four area hospitals.

Georgian Court University, a National Historic Landmark, resonates with the vivid legacy of the past and the determined appropriation of the future.
